Kiaʻi License

The Kiaʻi License ensures that the ʻike Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian knowlege and data) you share in Lauleo is protected under a guardianship model based on Hawaiian values. Holding and using ʻike Hawaiʻi in trust comes with the kuleana (responsibility that accompanies privelege) of doing so in a way that is pono (righteous and respectful). Pono use recognizes that the ea (sovereignty) of ʻike Hawaiʻi rests with Kanaka Hawaiʻi; it maintains that ea, fostering positive pilina (relationship) in the process.

As such, data collected through Lauleo is held and used to lift up and support ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, for the benefit of Kanaka Hawaiʻi and the wider Hawaiʻi community, and with a mindset that seeks to mālama (care for) the coming generations, the future kiaʻi of ʻike Hawaiʻi.

All data you provide through the Lauleo App is projected under the Kiaʻi License. The current Kiaʻi of the data is Te Reo Irirangi o Te Hiku o Te Ika. This guardianship is supported by several Hawaiʻi partners:

  • Awaiaulu
  • Kanaeokana
  • Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani College of Hawaiian Language
  • Te Reo Irirangi o Te Hiku o Te Ika

What is a Kiaʻi License?

The Kiaʻi license is derived from the Kaitiakitanga License. Kiaʻi (ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi) and Kaitiaki (te reo Māori) are words without direct English translations, but are closest to the concepts of guardian, protector, and custodian. In this context, we protect the data by maintaining Hawaiian values and protocols.

While we recognize the importance of publicly accessible tools and data, we’re mindful that because of occupation/colonization, ʻōiwi of Moananuiākea may not have access to the resources that enable them to benefit from public goods. As ʻōiwi, we must protect our ability to grow, develop, and innovate. By simply opening access to our tools, data and knowledge to capitalist models or businesses, we expose ourselves to digital exploitation in the modern world. Access by ʻōiwi standards requires shared values and the building of pilina.

The Kiaʻi License is a work in progress. It's a living license. It will evolve as necessary to ensure the data is respected and used for the benefit of ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and Kanaka Hawaiʻi.
