  • Pick a username that other users will be able to see.
  • You must provide and verify your email in order to register for the competition.
  • Create or join a group to enter the group competition. You can do this at anytime before or during the competition.
  • To join an existing group make sure you enter the group name exactly as it should be, or get a group link from a group member.
  • To create a group, just enter a group name. If the name is already taken, you need to choose a different name (or maybe someone already created your group!).
  • Each group must have at least 4 members and each group member must participate in reading Hawaiian language sentences to earn points for your group.
  • Each individual may only set up one account and create or join one group during the competition.
  • You may enter at any time - e.g. a person may join mid way through the competition.
  • Anyone with an existing profile on Lauleo may join a group by editing their profile - however, their existing recordings and points will not transfer to that group.

How to earn points

  • You earn points for each correct recording you do during the competition period from 12pm on Sunday the 23rd of February to 12pm on Sunday the 2nd of March, Hawaiʻi Standard Time.
  • A correct recording has good pronunciation and is read exactly as written.
  • E ka poʻe Niʻihau, you can pronounce the sentences as you would in ʻōlelo Niʻihau.
  • When you have completed the recording and saved it, you will receive a partial point.
  • When your recording has been reviewed and approved by the judging panel, you will receive the rest of the point.
  • If your recording is of a poor quality then you will not receive a point for that recording.
  • Your group’s score is the sum of all your group member's scores. The more members in your group, the easier it is to earn points. There is no limit to the number of people you may have in your group.
  • If your group or a member of your group is found to be consistently submitting incorrect recordings, your group will be contacted and if it is found to be intentional, the group member’s account may be temporarily deactivated.

How to win

  • Read as many sentences as possible! The more your group reads, the higher your chances of winning. But remember that good pronunciation is the key—only a correctly pronounced sentence receives a full point.
  • To qualify for the group cash prizes:
    • Your group must have at least 4 members.
    • Each member of the group must have contributed at least one approved recording.
    • Each group must have contributed at least 4 hours of recordings.
    • The group with the most points earned during the competition period will win first place, the second most points earned will win second place, and the group with the third most points will win third place.

      • First Place $5,000
